How-to: Fix the spacing issue with Helvetica Neue Bold in OS X Lion and Adobe CS

Every since I installed Lion last week I’ve had a great experience aside from one annoying glitch that I already wrote about: the spaces were missing from my Helvetica Neue Bold in Photoshop and Illustrator. Forum threads were started, tweets were sent out… but no answers seemed available.

Until today. Today, I stumbled on the answer, inspired by a forum thread I found on MacThemes. It’s quick, easy, and it works (at least for me). So here’s the instructions, prefaced with some disclaimers:

Disclaimers:
a) This worked for me, and I’ve only tested it in Photoshop CS4.
b) Backup stuff before you delete, change, or modify anything.

Onto the instructions…

  1. You need (I’m assuming) a pre-Lion version of Helvetica Neue. If you don’t have one, here you go: http://cl.ly/2v2E1b1W1H3i2z2u0p3p
  2. Copy it (Apple+C)
  3. Go to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/
    Frameworks/ATS.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ProtectedFonts/
  4. Delete HelveticaNeue.dfont from that folder and paste in the replacement (Apple+V)
  5. Go to /System/Library/Fonts/
  6. Delete HelveticaNeue.dfont from that folder and it should auto-replace itself. If it doesn’t, paste in the replacement again
  7. At this point, you should clear out font caches for Photoshop. I use Font Explorer so that makes it easy. You can also use Onyx to do that.
  8. Reboot

Hope this works for everyone else!

You just saved my day! Thanks, it works with CS3 just let everyone know.

Great tip, thanks! This was screwing up all my iOS templates. I use CS4.

I used this simple method for clearing out the font cache, no apps required: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84363.html

Thanks so much for this! That was so annoying :)

  4. Zeke says:

Worked for me as well. Thanks!

  5. This is the best post, ever posted, in the history of people posting things on the internet, bbs, chalkboards, and dare I say, cave walls.

I have three sites close to design sign off and I had no idea how to resolve this issue without rebuilding all the fonts in the documents.

I cannot thank you enough for posting this.

Thanks for pposting your fixes to the Helvetica problem on OS 10.7. I made the mistake of upgrading to 10.6 as soon as it came out ony to find out I could not use my Helvetica Neue Postscript fonts. Took me a zillion hours to get back the OS 10.5.8 that I am still running.

Question, will the fixes you are doing allow me to use my Helvetica Neue Postscript fonts??

    Joe

    • Sorry Joe, don’t know the answer to that.

    • Kevin Neal says:

Hi, we use the postscript versions of Helvetica Neue in Leopard, snow leopard and lion, it took a bit of fiddling to get them to work in all OS’s cos they all handle it differently, for us putting the Helvetica Neue postscript in System Library and disabling the “alert if system fonts change” preference in font book worked. In lion there is a specific version of helvetica neue for the gui that doesn’t clash

    Thank you so much.

  8. Worked perfectly, many thanks!

    Adam,

Thanks for the reply. I will continue to watch the progress of the Adobe-Apple talks on this.

I will print your fix and try it on a separate start up drive before I upgrade my main MAC to Lion.

    Joe
